Cobia

Cobia in the Territory grow to over 50 kg and are great fighters that are often lost close to the boat where they are most difficult to handle. They rarely form large schools, usually moving in small groups of 2-5 fish. They are often encountered trolling or bait fishing for mackerel and sometimes swim alongside manta rays.

Other Names: Rachycentron Canadus. Black kingfish, cobe.
Location:All round the coast.
Season:Year round.
Method:Standard light-game fishing tackle in the 6 kg to 15 kg range. They are often caught when bait fishing offshore reefs using squid or fresh fish bait or whilst trolling for mackerel.
Regulations:No specific regulations - included in general possession limit.
Eating:Cobia are an excellent table fish with white, firm and moist flesh.
