BIRDING EVENTS 2010

The Arnhemland Bird Week and Aboriginal Cultural Adventure for 2010 was recently held and was an outstanding success.  15 eager birdwatchers from all over Australia descended on the Arnhemland Barramundi Nature Lodge at the end of June. Each day they headed out to prime birdwatching areas via 4WD and the occasional boat trip to search out the resident species. Once at their destination they had the chance to walk or float through virtually untouched wilderness with an expert guide.

This year there were some spectacular sightings by various members of the group, such as a Gouldian finch sitting next to a hooded parrot, 5 chestnut rails in one spot squawking at each other, the first client sighting of a Northern shrike-tit, a little kingfisher chasing a fishing lure and a rufous owl in a small patch of monsoon vine forest! The highlights of the trip were the flocks of rare hooded parrots found down on the floodplain and the many Gouldian finches located in various areas.

A spirited bird tally was held every evening with much competition evident amongst each guide’s group for that day. In total, 183 species were sighted with one experienced birdwatching couple ticking 30 species they had never seen before.

If you wish to join in the excitement of Arnhemland birdwatching, there are still places available for the remaining birding events for this year.  The late dry season safaris usually see an increase in migratory waders to the coast and coral cays off Maningrida.

Bird Bonanza: 27 August – 1 September

Late Dry Season Bird Safari: 9 – 14 September
